Šanec hill is one of the most popular places for relaxation and short walks for the people of Sabinov. It lies on the edge of the town by the Torysa river, in the Bachureň Mountains, and can be reached easily on foot from the centre.
Main highlights
- The Lookout Tower on Šanec, opened in 2020. It stands at an altitude of approximately 465 m above sea level and offers beautiful views of Sabinov, nearby villages, the Čergov Mountains and, in clear weather, more distant peaks.
- The Way of the Cross, created after 1990 on the initiative of Salesian youth. Fourteen wooden stations line the path and a large wooden cross stands at the top. The place is especially popular during Easter, but is visited throughout the year.
- Švabľovka Forest Park on the slopes of Šanec. In the past there were small sulphur baths using a mineral spring known since the late 15th century. Today the forest park is arranged for recreation – with walking trails, shelters, fire pits and educational routes.
Šanec is popular all year round. Local people come here for walks, running, cycling, sledging in winter or simply to relax in nature. The climb to the top takes about 20 to 30 minutes depending on the route and is suitable for families with children. From the ridge you can continue on hiking trails towards Kohút peak.
The name “Šanec” is a traditional local name for the hill that has been used in the Sabinov dialect for many years. Today it is one of the town’s landmarks and among the most visited recreation areas around Sabinov.
